Positive growth presents new opportunities and challenges ahead

The industry has shown some modest growth in comparison to the previous year. However, it must be noted there were some contributing factors including Easter falling in April 2012 compared to 2013 when it fell in March.  This resulted in one less day trade in 2012 compared to 2013.

Having said that, the growth of 4.23% in April 2013 compared to April 2012 is positive with the YTD growth (January - April) current at 2.9%. The Club industry has shown greater growth in the current YTD revenue figures, with clubs growing against the same period last year by 3.3% compared to the Hotel growth of 2.5%. While the growth has been positive, the industry has also seen an increase in gaming machine numbers with an additional 98 machines active in the Hotel market compared to a 47 unit increase in Clubs.

Bundaberg has experienced the largest growth (11.9%) when comparing April 2013 with April 2012.  With Mackay showing a decline in revenue at 4.8%, Gladstone has also experienced reduced growth compared to previous months results at 7.2%. However, it is still worth noting the 2 year comparison growth of 35%. Following on from this, Logan has shown a 3.6% increase in revenue in comparison with April 2013 and April of the previous year, while the 2 year comparison shows a decline of 1.1%.

Overall, the industry has experienced growth, and we are starting to see some venues struggling with the impact of increased costs and low revenue. There are a mix of venues who are trading very well and some who are experiencing difficulty. It is imperative in today's climate that venues are providing the best facilities to counteract increased competition and the battle for the disposable dollar. Ensuring your venue is the best in the area does not come easy and there are a multitude of items that must be precise all day, every day.  DWS can assist in all aspects and quite often a fresh set of eyes can lead to a new, profitable opportunity.
